Work tasks can reveal useful information about when pain appears and what function has changed, but they do not prove a diagnosis.

Pain can be disruptive even when the next step is not immediately clear. A useful evaluation does not begin with an assumption. It begins with your history, the pattern of symptoms, the effect on daily life, an examination when appropriate, and a conversation about what you have already tried. This guide is designed to help you prepare for that conversation.

## Start with the details that matter to you

Note tasks, positions, duration, symptom timing, breaks, and what work activities are now difficult. Share this with your clinician.

You do not need to use clinical language or keep perfect records. A few concrete examples can be enough: “I wake up after two hours because of pain,” “I cannot sit through a meeting,” or “I stopped taking my usual walk.” Those examples help connect symptoms to function. They also give you and your care team a clearer way to discuss goals over time.

## Questions worth bringing

Consider writing down these questions before your visit:

- What information is most important for understanding my symptoms?
- What are the possible next steps, and what is the purpose of each?
- Are there alternatives I should understand?
- What benefits, limitations, and risks should I consider for my situation?
- What change should prompt me to call the office or seek care sooner?

The answers depend on your medical history, current symptoms, examination findings, and any appropriate testing. A treatment that is useful for one person may not fit another person’s needs. That is why an individualized conversation matters.

## Keep the focus on function

Pain care is not only about a number on a scale. It can also involve the activities that make up a normal day: getting dressed, working, sleeping, driving, caring for family, exercising, or enjoying time with friends. Choose one or two activities you would like to discuss. A care plan cannot promise a particular result, but patient-defined goals can make the conversation more meaningful and measurable.

## When not to wait for a routine visit

Acute workplace injuries, severe symptoms, or new weakness should be evaluated promptly through the appropriate clinical or occupational-health route.

If you are unsure how urgent a symptom is, contact an appropriate health professional or seek urgent medical guidance. Social media and general online education cannot assess an individual symptom.

## Next step

If persistent pain is affecting your everyday function, schedule an individualized evaluation with AZ Pain Doctors. Bring your questions, the records requested by the office, and a clear picture of what you want help getting back to. Recommendations depend on a clinical assessment.
